According to a 2020 report by McKinsey & Company, black women hold only 3% of executive-level positions at Fortune 500 companies and are also underrepresented in leadership positions in other sectors and industries.
Despite these roadblocks, many black women have been successful in claiming their stake in the corporate American landscape, breaking through glass ceilings and garnering coveted leadership positions. Some examples of black women who have achieved success in corporate America include:
Ursula Burns, who was the first black woman to lead a Fortune 500 company as the
CEO of Xerox.
2) Shonda Rhimes, a television producer and writer with numerous successful shows to her name.
3) Mellody Hobson, the president and co-CEO of Ariel Investments, chairperson of Starbucks Corporation, and former chairperson of Dreamworks Animation. Ms. Hobson is also a well-known business leader and commentator.
Today, many organizations and initiatives exist that support and promote the advancement of black women in corporate America, including the National Black MBA Association and the Black Women’s Roundtable. It is important to continue to work towards greater diversity and inclusion in the workplace, including at the leadership level, in order to create a more equitable and inclusive corporate landscape. The pieces are already falling into place, and it is very likely that, in the foreseeable future, many black women will occupy seats of distinction at all professional tiers.
